What GD7 delivers

Hands-on engineering and delivery management across the whole asset life, for utilities and private developers.

Offshore Met Mast Design

Concept to detailed design of new offshore meteorological mast structures, including foundations, access and fatigue-driven details.

Monopile Foundation Installation

Installation engineering and delivery management for offshore wind turbine monopile foundations, from method statements to marine spread.

Export & Inter-Array Cables

Project management of export cable and inter-array cable installation campaigns, including route, vessel, burial and termination interfaces.

UXO Risk & Clearance Management

Project management of unexploded ordnance clearance for cable routes, with a risk-based approach to what genuinely needs clearing.

Decommissioning

Planning and delivery of offshore wind decommissioning activities, and the monopile extraction system now in development.

3D Modelling & Visualisation

SketchUp Pro modelling and 3D-printed physical models to make complex marine operations clear to clients, regulators and crews.

Monopile extraction system

PATENT PENDING (UK) · EU TO FOLLOW

Thousands of monopiles will need to come out of the seabed as the first generation of wind farms reaches end of life. GD7 is developing a dedicated extraction system to make that safer, faster and more predictable.

  • Purpose-designed for monopile decommissioning
  • Engineered by someone who has installed them
  • Concept shown here; detail released under NDA

Concept illustration only. Not a technical representation of the patented design.

// 06 INSIGHTS

Challenging how the industry works

Two positions from GD7 that question accepted practice in offshore wind.

UXO clearance as it stands is not needed, and it needs reform

Cable route UXO clearance is often driven by a blanket default: assume a hazard, clear everything, price in the programme risk. GD7's position is that a properly evidenced, risk-based assessment should decide what actually has to be removed, how much residual risk is acceptable, and what can be avoided or left in place.

  • Replace blanket clearance with quantified risk assessment
  • Use route engineering and avoidance before disposal
  • Cut programme, cost and environmental impact

Tunnel the connection between offshore and onshore substations

Cable landfalls are a recurring consenting, programme and environmental pain point. New tunnelling technology is lowering cost and increasing advance rates, which makes a bored connection between the onshore and offshore sides a serious option for new wind farms.

  • Less disruption at beaches, dunes and the intertidal zone
  • Fewer weather-window constraints than open-sea cable laying
  • Protected, accessible and replaceable cable route
  • Rapidly improving tunnelling cost and speed

Credentials you can rely on

GD7 Ltd is a Plymouth-based engineering consultancy led by a Chartered Civil Engineer and Fellow of the Institution of Civil Engineers. The work is hands-on: marine civil engineering, offshore construction and global offshore wind, backed by direct operational experience including surface supply commercial diving qualifications.

Ongoing consultancy for EON covers decommissioning and export cable installation. Outside the day job, GD7 builds its own engineering tools and software and makes physical models on 3D printers.
